Quota Company Announces Fundraiser European Fish Trader Published: 30 May, 2002
Newlyn fishermen will be donating fish for the fundraiser
THE DUCHY Fish Quota Company (DFQC) has announced that it will hold a public fish auction in Truro on 8 June in a bid to raise money to keep Cornwall fishing.
Robin Turner, a fish merchant and auctioneer at Newlyn Market, will be selling high quality fish to the highest bidders in order to buy fish quota from Cornish vessels leaving the fleet. The quota is held in perpetuity and leased back to fishermen trying to establish themselves in the industry.
Robin Turner, a fish merchant and DFQC director, stated: “Buying fresh fish at this auction will help empower future generations of fishermen in Cornwall. There will also be an opportunity for the public to ask questions and discover more about the Duchy Fish Quota Company’s aims and the fishing industry itself.”
Nathan de Rozarieux, a fisherman and DFQC director, added: “All of the fish being auctioned will be donated to the DFQC by Cornish fishermen. Weather permitting we hope to have a wide range of fish and shellfish on display so please come along. You might get a bargain.”
•Any fisherman wishing to donate any quantity of fish or shellfish should contact the CFPO office 01736 351050 or Robin Turner 01736 363726 before Friday 7 June.
