MCA appoints new non-executive director Published:  19 July, 2007

THE Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has appointed a new Non-Executive Director, Captain Nigel Palmer OBE, who will bring 40 years of maritime experience to the board.

Nigel Palmer will join the two other Non Executive Board Members, Bob Banham and Julian Lee. Bob and Julian have extensive experience in the commercial world and both have expertise in accountancy and governance best practice.

Nigel Palmer will bring a wealth of maritime knowledge to the board, from his 17 years as an Officer in the Merchant Navy to his extensive career ashore with BP Shipping, most recently as the Director of Government and Industry. He currently Chairs the Merchant Navy Training Board and the Maritime Skills Alliance and is Deputy Chairman of the Britannia Steamship Insurance Association. MCA says he will be an invaluable resource to Peter Cardy and his Executive Directors, providing independent advice about the shipping industry.

Non Executive Directors are a crucial part of the Agency’s Executive Board. Their role is to act as impartial advisors for the Agency, offering a balance between support and advice on the one hand, and rigorous challenge on the other.

Peter Cardy says: “We are very privileged to bring to the board someone with such a wealth of maritime knowledge and experience, and are looking forward to the benefit of both his scrutiny and advice.”
