SMOKED organic salmon from Inverawe Smokehouses in rural Argyll has received the prestigious Supreme Champion award at the national 2006 Food and Drink Expo in Birmingham.

Inverawe Smokehouses, a family owned Scottish company based in Taynuilt, Argyll, received unanimous support and excellent commendations from the panel of judges for the premium salmon. This had already been named as Best Fish but also lifted the overall prize over 600 other exhibited products as Supreme Champion.

Inverawe’s traditionally smoked, organic salmon triumphed over strong competition from a diverse range of contenders in the food industry, including alcoholic drinks, ethnic food, biscuits and specialist preserves to achieve the top prize.

The judging panel, including Jean-Christophe Novelli, along with several notable food writers, said that Inverawe’s smoked organic salmon was: “the best organic smoked salmon I’ve tasted.”

Robert Campbell-Preston, owner of Inverawe Smokehouses, was delighted to accept the accolade: “We are particularly proud to have won this award for our natural smoked organic salmon. Once sourced from organic fisheries, the salmon is smoked for about two days over log fires in brick kilns to give it the smokey flavour, mouth-watering scent and well cured texture. Ours is a completely natural, time-honoured process.”

A proud Robert went on to say: “This win signifies that not only has the exceptional quality of produce from Scotland been recognised as the best throughout the UK, but also makes the dedicated, slow smoking process that our salmon undergoes even more worthwhile.

“We are overjoyed that an organic product from the Scottish Highlands has been recognised by the judges as supreme champion and take great pride in the uplifting comments and recognition from the panel.”

Inverawe’s award winning smoked organic salmon is bred by Balta Island Seafare based on the island of Unst in the Shetland isles. The salmon are reared in low stock density farms, fed a healthy diet and do not receive any artificial colourings at any stage of the food process. Inverawe Smokehouses is Soil Association approved.
