Caviar Smuggling War Sees Death Of Furry Enforcer Fishing Monthly Published:  25 July, 2003 RUSSIA’S only sniffer cat has been run over in what police think may have been an organised hit. Rusik, a former stray cat which became a key weapon in the fight against caviar smugglers, was crushed under the wheels of a car in which he had previously found contraband sturgeon. The driver claimed he did not see Rusik but police say they have suspicions about the incident, local media reported.Rusik was found at a police checkpoint in the Stavropol region bordering the Caspian Sea just over a year ago and was soon drafted onto the force after proving he had a nose for smuggled fish.Almost 95% of the world’s caviar comes from the Caspian Sea. Authorities say illegal sturgeon fishing by smugglers is driving the fish to extinction.
