THE Swedish minister of fisheries, Ann-Christin Nykvist yesterday met with the Russian agriculture minister Alexej Gordejev in Moscow.

During the meeting, several topical questions surrounding fishing were discussed.

The Swedish minister expressed her concern over the latest report from the ICES, which recommended a cod-fishing stop in the Eastern part of the Baltic Sea.

Ms Nykvist expressed that she would appreciate support from Russia for responsible fishing politics, which does not jeopardise a sustainable fishing, in the upcoming negotiations about fishing quotas in the Baltic between Russia and the EU.

Sweden also raised the question of reports of illegal fishing of cod in the Barents Sea.

The Russian minister said he was open for cooperation in the pressing fishing questions both with regards to a sustainable usage of the fishing resource and a more effective control, according to Ms Nykvist.
