A GROUP of Alaskan trade, fishery and tourism representatives along with Alaskan Governor Frank H. Murkowski last week hosted a press reception and trade luncheon at the Atlantic Kempinski Hotel in Hamburg in order to promote Alaska seafood in the German market. The event was co-hosted by representatives of the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute.Twelve members of the consumer and trade media attended the reception, including representatives from Essen & Trinken, Fischmagazin and the Frankfurter Zeitung. Ten representatives from major German seafood companies attended the trade luncheon, including members from Frosta AG, Gottfiried Friedrichs, Pickenpack and Royal Greenland. A broad menu of Alaska seafood products was served, accompanied by a display of Alaska seafood products. The governor provided opening remarks, which were followed by a presentation about Alaska seafood production and exports by ASMI’s international program director, K.C. Dochtermann. “Clearly, the German market perception about Alaska and the acceptance of our wild seafood products sends a positive message to our state and industry. While some German entities may have been sceptical about wild Alaska seafood in the past, this market now demonstrates a tremendous potential for growth,” said the governor.The group also toured Die Raucherei, a ‘micro’ seafood smoking plant located near Hamburg. Die Raucherei has been in business since 1988, and serves an exclusive, high-end clientele, mostly in the catering and foodservice sectors. While the plant initially worked exclusively with farmed salmon, during the past decade it has increasingly begun promoting wild Alaska seafood products. In the mid-1990’s the facility began smoking wild Alaska coho and sockeye salmon and during past few years has added both wild Alaska halibut and Alaska black cod to its product line. “Alaska is making significant progress in competing with farmed salmon. Companies that exclusively produced farmed salmon are now working with wild Alaska products,” said Bob Thorstenson, Jr., president of the United Fishermen of Alaska. is published by Special Publications.
