Moredun Scientific is offering an experimental challenge model of cardiomyopathy syndrome in Atlantic salmon post-smolts. The primary cause of the condition is infection with piscine myocarditis virus (PMCV). Affected fish often show no external signs other than sudden mortality. Clinical signs, where present, are typically those associated with heart failure. Because PMCV has not yet been isolated in pure culture, the challenge model uses an injectable suspension prepared from heart tissue from clinically affected salmon.
Experimentally challenged fish typically show no gross signs of disease, and the pathological effect is determined by scoring of histopathological changes in the heart.
