Fresh salmon prices in Norway fell sharply last week to the lowest level so far this year.
Figures from the national monitoring organisation Statistics Norway show they dropped by NOK 5.29 to just over NOK 77.29 per kilo in the period May 11th to May 17th.
The last time they were at this level was a month ago and around autumn last year.
Export volumes were also lower falling by just over 1,000 tons to 20.806 tons.
Predictions late last year that salmon prices would harden in 2026 have so far yet to materialise.
However, they were made well before the outbreak of war in the Middle East and further problems around US tariff sanctions.
The conflict has led to serious air route disruption and considerably pushed up aircraft traffic costs which have not helped.
The Norwegian salmon market is currently dealing with a large supply situation which has brought the drop in prices and demand is described as being weak.
The sector is also soon to enter the summer season when prices tend to drop in any case, although an early conclusion to the Middle East conflict would clearly help to improve things. In short, the salmon market is currently in a semi-depressed state.
Frozen salmon sales fell by more than 200 tons to 363 tons in week 20, although prices hardened slightly to NOK 70.77 per kilo.
It should be noted that the Statistics Norway figures may differ from what is happening on the ground as they include all weight classes and fish sold on contract.
