Advancing fish health through tailored vaccine solutions

The approach taken by Ceva Ridgeway Biologicals means vaccines can be matched more precisely to local needs and conditions

Ceva Ridgeway Biologicals Ltd, (Ceva Ridgeway) part of Ceva Santé Animale (Ceva), is supporting aquaculture producers with tailored vaccine solutions designed to address the evolving disease challenges faced under modern farming conditions.

Working closely with leading producers, the company develops autogenous vaccines based on pathogens isolated directly from farms, enabling a targeted and responsive approach to fish health management.

From field to formulation

Autogenous vaccines are developed from site-specific pathogens, ensuring that vaccine composition reflects the actual disease pressure experienced by fish.
This approach is particularly valuable in aquaculture, where pathogen profiles can vary significantly between sites and over time. By aligning vaccine design with real epidemiological conditions, producers can achieve more consistent protection compared to traditional solutions.

Ceva Ridgeway supports the full process, from isolate identification and laboratory development through to manufacturing and deployment under commercial conditions.

Supporting farm implementation
Effective disease control depends not only on vaccine design, but also on how vaccines are applied in practice.

Ceva Ridgeway works closely with producers to optimise vaccination strategies, including timing, delivery methods such as immersion and injection, and on-farm safety testing. This ensures that vaccines deliver consistent and reliable performance at the farms.

Delivering measurable impact
A key example of this approach is Ceva Ridgeway’s collaboration with Mowi Scotland, where bespoke vaccines have been developed to address bacterial challenges including novel pathogens related to Pasteurella skyensis and emerging variant strains of Yersinia ruckeri.

Following implementation, vaccination programmes developed by Ceva Ridgeway, in collaboration with Mowi Scotland, have contributed to a reduction of approximately 35% in biomass mortality and around 45% in fish mortality numbers across seawater production cycles, as reported by Mowi Scotland in their 2025 performance update*.

These results indicate stronger biological performance and greater production stability under farming conditions, demonstrating the value of combining targeted vaccine development with practical field application at scale.

The success of this work has been recognised, with Ceva and Mowi shortlisted as finalists in the Aquaculture Awards 2026 (Collaboration category). Aquaculture Awards Finalists 2026 - Aquaculture Awards.

Looking ahead
Ongoing development work at Ceva Ridgeway includes vaccines targeting emerging variants of Moritella viscosa, Piscirickettsia salmonis and Aeromonas salmonicida, reflecting a proactive approach to evolving disease threats.

At the same time, vaccination plays an important role in reducing reliance on antimicrobial treatments, supporting more sustainable aquaculture practices.
