The conference, held over 9-12 December, was dedicated to exploring the latest academic research and commercial possibilities in algae biomass.

Riga welcomed 382 delegates from 38 countries and 236 organisations, reflecting sustained global engagement from the algae community.

Jointly organised by the European Algae Biomass Association (EABA) and DLG Benelux, the conference continued to build on its reputation as a pivotal gathering for experts across science, technology, and industry.

“AlgaEurope remains a cornerstone event for our global algae community,” said Carlos Unamunzaga, President of EABA. “Each year, it brings together the people and ideas that push our sector forward, driving innovation and real-world impact.”

Connecting science, technology, and industry

Under the supervision of Conference Chairman Jean-Paul Cadoret, AlgaEurope 2025 delivered a comprehensive programme structured around 24 plenary sessions, 107 speakers and 116 poster contributions.

Keynote speakers - including leading voices such as Helena Abreu, Avigad Vonshak, Poul Erik Jensen, and Leonel Pereira - provided visionary perspectives on the future of algae science and applications.

Sessions explored a full spectrum of topics including algae physiology, biorefinery concepts, food and feed innovation, genetic technologies, production systems, and bioremediation. Poster presentations created vibrant spaces for emerging research and facilitated in-depth scientific discussions among delegates.

AlgaEurope 2025 reinforced its position as a hub linking research with real-world industrial development. Highlights included:

In-depth presentations, round table and panel discussions, and more, including:

  • The announcement of the winners of the newly introduced picture contest, highlighting algae’s beauty, diversity, and ecological importance while inspiring curiosity, education, and positive public perception through compelling images.
  • A dynamic trade show featuring innovative solutions and technologies from 20 organisations.
  • Site visits to síbiotech, providing attendees hands-on insights into innovative algae production technologies and applications.

Beyond the formal sessions, participants enjoyed a series of memorable networking activities. The Algae Happy Hour offered unique algae-based product tastings and informal exchanges, while a festive Conference Dinner featured traditional Latvian cuisine and folklore performances.

The Award Evening celebrated excellence across the community, including the Poster Presentation Awards, Life & Career Award, Impact & Action Award, and Youth & Outreach Award.

Attendees were able to navigate the programme with the help of the AlgaEurope App, which enhanced connections, matchmaking, and participant interaction.

Kuno Jacobs, Managing Director of DLG Benelux, the organisers, said: “AlgaEurope is where ideas meet implementation. We are proud to co-organise an event that brings researchers and industry together to convert innovation into impact.”

The success of AlgaEurope 2025 was made possible through the generous support of its sponsors: SCHOTT, A4F, BrightWave, LGEM, and RIGA LIVE.
