The search for new protein sources for fish feed has led a team of Norwegian scientists to one that has been used in land based agriculture for thousands of years – grass. The Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO) recently opened Norway’s first pilot plant for green biorefining.

Research scientist Steffen Adler told the Global Seafood Alliance’s Responsible Seafood Advocate: “Our work opens up the possibility of a domestically produced feed, while for species like salmon, it’s crucial to have a high-quality protein feed that meets their nutritional requirements. We are looking for local protein that could be used in salmon farming, and are trying to find it in plants such as grass and macroalgae.”
