An international consortium aims to support tilapia aquaculture in Ghana with state-of-the-art pathogen detection technology.

Led by UK firm Esox Biologics, it also includes the State University of Londrina in Brazil and Tropo Farms, Ghana’s largest tilapia farm. Traditional pathogen detection tools identify a single pathogen at a time. With total microbiome analysis, using metagenomics, every microorganism is identified in a single sample. This project aims to establish a metagenomics assay specifically for tilapia farms in Ghana so that producers can identify all tilapia pathogens present from a single sample of water.

The project is supported by the Climate Smart Agriculture Partnership: UK–Brazil–Africa, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and delivered by Innovate UK.
