The fish farming organisation Salmon Chile has elected a new president.

Patricio Melero Abaroa new Salmon Chile president
He is Patricio Melero Abaroa, an agricultural engineer with an extensive public career and broad experience in regulatory matters related to the aquaculture sector.
He takes over from Arturo Clement, who has led the association for the past eight years and played a key role in raising the salmon’s industry’s profile at home and abroad.
Abaroa will assume his duties on March 1st. He is a graduate from the University of Chile and has a distinguished career in the public sector.
He served on various aquaculture and fishing related organisations and in the second government of former Chilean President Sebastián Piñera.
He said: “Salmon farming is currently the country’s second largest export and has enormous potential to continue growing and expanding its markets, thereby generating more quality jobs and investments.
“ I accept the challenge of leading SalmonChile with the purpose of promoting this growth within a framework of environmental sustainability, technological innovation, and public-private collaboration that generates greater certainty to facilitate its development.”
SalmonChile has also paid tribute to the outgoing president Arturo Clément, who it said led the association for several years, contributing to the strengthening and positioning of salmon farming at the national level.
He also promoted the development of sustainable production standards and best practices in the Chilean salmon industry.
Salmon Chile said that Clément will support the new president for the next three months to smooth transition process.
