Boats and Barges

Fish Farmer’s webinar on Boats and Barges will address some of the big issues for working vessels in the aquaculture sector, including: will hydrogen power, electric power or hybrid solutions provide the path to Net Zero? Why are wellboats getting bigger and will this continue? And how can boats and barges be made safer?

Cleaner Fish

Since their introduction, cleaner fish have proved to be a valuable ally in the fight against sea lice. But some issues have emerged regarding their use: how can we better look after cleaner fish and their welfare? Can we improve their feed and the way the industry monitors their wellbeing? How can we ensure that cleaner fish are not unduly affected by treatments that protect salmon against problems like sea lice and gill disease? Is the industry geared up to provide fish in the numbers required

Post-smolt strategy

The big salmon producers are increasingly investing in facilities designed to grow smolts in more protected locations before they are released to sea cages, in the hope that larger fish will prove more robust. Our panel would discuss whether this strategy will pay off and how best to approach it in a way that is affordable and effective.

Looking at industry-university collaborations and also how to manage spin-outs (businesses emerging out of academic research) and spin-ins.

Shellfish

Shellfish production is one of the most environmentally sustainable sectors in the food industry, but the UK industry is facing a number of challenges, including seawater quality issues, Brexit red tape and a dispute with environmental regulators over the restrictions on farming Pacific oysters. We look at what changes in policy the industry needs to help it to grow and succeed – and how technology can help.

Quest for Net Zero

Cutting back on greenhouse gas emissions is a key aim for business over a wide range of sectors. Finfish aquaculture already has a smaller carbon footprint than other types of animal protein, but there is plenty of scope to do more. We’ll be looking at switching workboats and barges to electric or hybrid power to focusing on more sustainable aquafeed sources.

Mort Retrieval

Mort retrieval and disposal. What is the best way to remove dead fish from a pen without harming or stressing the other fish? How can they best be disposed of in a way that protects the environment and doesn’t impact negatively on the neighbouring community? We’ll be looking at silage, treatment and transportation issues. We will also be exploring initiatives to treat morts as a resource – a ‘sidestream’ for the aquaculture industry – rather than just as a problem to be solved.
