Cooke Aquaculture has been named as one of Atlantic Canada’s Top Employers for 2024. The company, which also has a large salmon farming business in Scotland, has won plaudits for the way its treats staff and builds strong communities.

Kristina Leung, managing editor at Mediacorp, organisers of the annual Canada’s Top 100 Employers competition, said: “This year’s winning employers understand that it’s not just about making charitable donations.

“It’s about providing benefits like paid time off so employees can volunteer with local charitable groups without having to worry about losing income or precious vacation time. In many cases, employers are matching these volunteer hours with donations, which is an effective way to encourage volunteerism.”

Cooke has more than 2,300 employees in dozens of roles and locations across the Atlantic provinces – from southwest New Brunswick, in Charlottetown, PEI, throughout Nova Scotia and on the south coast of Newfoundland.

“Cooke’s core purpose is: To cultivate the ocean with care, nourish the world, provide for our families, and build stronger communities,” said Glenn Cooke, CEO of Cooke Aquaculture.

The company said it empowers its employees to champion causes close to their hearts. From mentoring in local schools to shoreline clean-ups and participation in charitable events like the Big Bike for Heart & Stroke, the navy-blue Team Cooke t-shirts are a familiar sight in communities where the company operates.

Glenn Cooke added: “The strength of our family company is our people, and Atlantic Canadians are known for their kindness, hard-work and pride in their communities.”
