Brussels first for women in seafood


THE world’s largest seafood show, to be held in Brussels in May, is to focus on women in the industry, during a seminar running alongside the exhibition.
The first session of the Seafood Expo Global Series on Women in Leadership will be launched with a panel discussion, What Government and the Private Sector Can do to Support the Inclusion of Women in the Seafood Industry.
This will feature Canadian officials and speakers in the global seafood industry, said Wynter Courmont, the event director of expo organiser Diversified Communications, in an interview for the April issue of Fish Farmer.
The panel will discuss the importance of supporting women in the industry, with examples of companies that are already promoting the participation of women at all levels.
Following the panel, Mary Larkin, president of Diversified Communications, will interview Marie Christine Monfort, co-founder and president of the International Organisation for Women in the Seafood Industry (WSI).
She will share her experiences as a seafood market analyst advising private businesses, national public institutions, and international organisations, before promoting gender equality in the seafood industry through WSI.
The event is open to all registered attendees of the expo, which is expanding this year.
Processing businesses will be accommodated across two halls for the first time, and more than 70 national and regional pavilions will showcase their seafood products and equipment over three days at the trade event, which attracted more than 29,100 visitors last year.
Seafood Expo Global/Seafood Processing Global runs in Brussels from May 7-9.
