Biotech business working on algal bloom solution

Denmark-based Sundew has entered a collaboration with Mote Marine Laboratory of Florida to develop natural solutions for hazardous algal blooms (aka “red tides”, pictured) based on Sundew’s marine microbial extracts.

The collaboration builds on previous work by Sundew, Mote and the Bigelow Lab for Ocean Sciences (Maine) that showed Sundew’s extracts are highly potent against the organisms that cause red tides.

Mote will provide $121,000 (£94,000) of funding to support studies in Florida under the Florida Red Tide Mitigation and Technology Development Initiative.

Sundew Chief Executive Giovanni Salerno said: “We are honoured to partner with Mote Marine Laboratory on this crucial environmental initiative... it is an important part of our mission to use modern biological technologies to solve aquatic ecosystem problems.”
