Seafood giant receives top rating for processing plants

Samherji, Iceland’s largest fishing and aquaculture group, have received the highest rating for its seafood plants, which process both farmed and vessel caught fish.

The annual audit was carried out by the international certification body Intertek SAI Global at the company’s land-based processing plants in Akureyri and Dalvík.

The audit revealed that both processes meet the highest quality requirements generally set for food production, and both land-based processing plants received the highest rating from the certification body.

This is the leading BRC (British Retail Consortium) standard, but international buyers of products usually require their suppliers to have the certification in question, thus demonstrating that the production is of high quality.

The BRC standard emphasises, among other things, food safety, quality of production methods, and quality and wholesomeness of products. The certification confirms that the quality management system of the company in question meets the highest requirements set for international food manufacturers.

Samherji has had the certification in question for many years, and works closely with international certification bodies that regularly inspect all production processes.

Guðbjörg Ósk Sveinsdóttir, Samherji’s quality manager, says that representatives of Intertek SAI Global usually inspect the land processes once a year.

"Sometimes the certification body’s visits are announced with a certain amount of notice, but this time there was no notice.

“In short, the BRC standard is about companies "conclusively demonstrating that they have a planned, documented and effective quality system to ensure the production of safe food.

“These audits are very detailed, as we are producing for demanding customers, including the world’s largest retail chains.”
