Salmon prices take another tumble

Norwegian salmon prices are tumbling back to the low levels that dominated much of last year.

The monitoring organisation Statistics Norway reports that fresh salmon fell by 9.3% in the week between 16-22 February (week eight).

Analysts, such as Pareto Securities, are predicting that the tariff issue will have a negative effect on global demand of salmon.
They averaged NOK 84.89 per kilo against NOK 93.60 per kilo in the previous seven-day period. The figure includes all weight classes and fish sold on contract.

Predictions before Christmas that prices would harden this year have yet to materialise.

But the start of 2026 has been dominated by “in-out” tariff confusion, which has led to falling demand from the United States, especially with salmon fillets.

For Norway and Iceland, they dropped to 10%, then went up to 15%, before returning to 10% again. No one knows what will happen next with Trump, but his actions are unsettling the global market.

Hold-ups due to severe weather has also played a part, but such conditions are normal in Norway during the winter.

More significantly, exports sales dropped by more than 2,000 tons last week to 17,853 tons, although volumes since the start of the year are well up on this time in 2025.

Analysts, such as Pareto Securities, are predicting that the tariff issue will have a negative effect on global demand, leading to reductions in salmon prices.

Pareto says that the situation is evolving rapidly and is leading to limited short-term visibility.

Frozen salmon exports fell by 59 tons to 409 tons, with the price per kilo remaining stable at NOK 67.18 per kilo.
