Trump said on Truth Social yesterday: "If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A."
The US president has said he is prepared to slap 100% levies on all goods if the country strikes a trade deal with China.

At present Canadian seafood has been totally free of US tariffs because of an earlier tripartite deal, which also includes Mexico.

This has given Canadian aquaculture a huge advantage over rival countries such as Norway, the Faroe islands, and Scotland.

Also, Canada has struck a new deal with China, which had been restricting seafood exports, with salmon also seemingly excluded.

Trump said on Truth Social yesterday: "If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A."

He added: "China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life.”

It is not clear if Trump is also threatening to scrap the tripartite agreement with Canada and Mexico, which gave seafood a tariff free ride.

Canada is a top exporter of salmon to the US, with exports valued at over CAD $900 million a year.

In 2024, Canada exported 74,719 tonnes of farmed Atlantic salmon, with 93.5% going across the border.

The US market is also heavily dependent on Canadian salmon, which benefits from proximity and quality reputation.

Some of the seafood industries of both countries are also closely intertwined financially.
