The delivery marks the beginning of regular sales of large fry as part of the company’s dual revenue model.

In addition to producing salmon for human consumption, LAXEY will utilise part of its production capacity to breed and sell high-quality large fry to other salmon farming companies.

It said: “This hybrid approach contributes to increased operational flexibility and allows the company to start generating revenue before full production of food fish is reached.”

The transfer of the large fry was carried out by pumping directly from LAXEY’s large fry house to a partner’s well boat and went very smoothly. Preparations had been carefully planned to ensure a safe and successful delivery.

LAXEY says its location in the Vestmann Islands is highly suitable for such deliveries, as natural shelter and a short shipping route to the open sea make conditions ideal for the transport and export of large fish.

Selling large fry can also benefit customers by shortening the time spent in the sea, thereby reducing biological risk, and it also strengthens customers’ operational security, it adds.

LAXEY  has built a fish farm that can eventually produce up to 32,000 tons of salmon a  year, creating more than 100 direct new jobs in the Vestmann Islands. There will also be a number of indirect jobs.

LAXEY has a hatchery in Friðarhöfn that uses a RAS system while the production facility uses a flow-through system with about 65% re-use, where clean seawater is pumped up through the facility and cleaned before being returned to the sea.
