Aquaculture technology group AKVA has signed a contract with Norwegian salmon farmer Årdal Aqua AS for the design and delivery of a smolt facility at Årdal, Rogaland in Norway.

The new RAS (recirculating aquaculture system) smolt facility will provide a production capacity of six million smolt per year at 100 grams. The contract has an estimated value of NOK 200m (£15.45m), with design and engineering work scheduled to commence in the first half of this year.
Årdal Aqua is jointly owned by: Grieg Seafood Rogaland AS (subsidiary of the major salmon farming company Grieg Seafood); Vest Havbruk AS (a company specialising in smolt and post-smolt production); and Omfar AS (an investor group based in Stavanger, Norway).
Last year, AKVA stepped in to replace the bankrupt RAS specialist Billund Aquaculture as lead contractor for Årdal Aqua’s Rogaland project.
AKVA has been benefiting from the boom in post-smolt projects in Norway, as salmon producers look to grow out their fish to a larger size before they are exposed to the hazards of the sea.
