The Norwegian Seafood Council says exports increased by NOK 579 million (£43m) between January and June. Volume growth was up by 34% to 39,505 tonnes.

Much of the higher consumption seems to be focused in specific countries such as the United States, Thailand and the Ukraine. It is known that many consumers in America and Thailand prefer the milder taste of trout.

Poland, is a major seafood processing country, particularly salmon, but is now taking up trout in a big way.

It had the greatest value growth in the first half of the year, with an increase in export value of NOK 154 million (£11m) , or 150%, compared to the first half of last year.

The export volume to Poland ended at 3,239 tonnes, which is 157% higher than the first half of last year. The trout is largely further processed for export, says Paul Aandahl, seafood analyst at the Seafood Council.

“So far this year, the biggest growth is from Poland fresh fillet to the German market,” adds Aandahl.

Meanwhile, the soaring price of cod on international markets is hugely benefitting Norway’s cod farmers.

The average price of fresh cod last week was NOK 75 (£5.50) per kilo, creating a near nightmare for Britain’s fish and chip shop businesses.

Exports of fresh farmed cod have never been higher, said Seafood Council analyst Eivind Hestvik Brækkan. The share of farmed cod against trawler caught fish is also at a record high, accounting for 31% of all fresh cod exports which were worth NOK 1.8 billion (£131m) in the first half.

Cod farming is now one of the fastest growing aquaculture segments in Norway with existing companies expanding and new players entering the market.
