Kennedy urges Americans to eat more salmon

Americans are being urged by their government to eat more salmon for the sake of their health.

The call comes from the controversial health secretary Robert F. Kennedy junior, who has caused concerns over his views on vaccines and unscientific theories.

But this time he is treading a more conventional path on telling Americans how they can live longer.

Kennedy has announced new dietary guidelines to address the growing health crisis affecting the country, where 50% of the population suffers from pre-diabetes or diabetes, and 75% of adults report having at least one chronic condition.

These figures are closely linked to dietary patterns, based on high consumption of added sugars and ultra-processed foods.

The politician has produced a new food pyramid, available on the official RealFood.gov website, which marks a significant shift from previous decades by prioritising the consumption of high-quality protein and healthy fats, particularly omega-3-rich seafood such as salmon and trout.

Within this category, salmon is identified as a key food due to its contribution to improved cardiovascular health, reduced chronic inflammation, and increased insulin sensitivity.
In line with this approach, the new guidelines recommend nearly doubling daily protein intake, incorporating it into every meal, and prioritising sources that provide healthy fats, such as the omega-3 fatty acids found in salmon.

They also establish a target protein intake of between 0.54 and 0.73 grams per pound of body weight per day, solidifying salmon as a strategic protein within the new nutritional framework due to its high biological value.

However, the problem with this is that his boss, President Trump, has imposed tariffs of varying degrees on salmon-importing countries such as Norway, Iceland – and even the UK – which makes the fish more expensive.

The development has been welcomed, though, by the president of SalmonChile, Arturo Clément, who said: "These guidelines confirm that salmon is a complete, nutritious food that is easy to incorporate into the daily diet, due to its contribution of high-quality protein and healthy fats such as omega-3."

But he also warned that tariffs could affect millions of Americans who need access to healthy food.
