Another year in aquaculture is drawing to a close, and if 2025 is anything to go by, 2026 will see some things that, right now, are impossible to predict. What we can say is that next year will see continuing innovation across all the sectors within aquaculture, and this is a uniting theme for many of the feature articles in this issue.
Our report on Data in Aquaculture, for example, includes the workshop held for the aquaculture and fisheries sector in the National Robotarium, on the campus of Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, on the topic of robotics and AI, and their application to ocean industries.
We also look at the arguments for and against farming octopus, and at the issues this sector needs to address.
The December issue of Fish Farmer also features an interview with Steffen Nielsen, CEO at Danish trout farmer Danforel, and a special feature on aquaculture in India, where government initiatives are looking to grow the industry, both for food security and for economic growth.
We also report on the annual conference of Seaweed Scotland – as the Scottish Seaweed Industry Association is now known – and Sandy Neil highlights some of the projects benefiting from the latest round of financial support from the Marine Fund Scotland.
On the shellfish front, Nicki Holmyard has a seasonal roundup of news, including the revelation that a Michelin-starred chef, no less, is advocating Red Bull shots with oysters!
We hope you enjoy this packed December issue, and wish all our readers the very best for the festive season and the New Year.
