The ultimate water analyser for fish farming applications

Aquaculture businesses and researchers must use proven tools to monitor water quality on a daily basis. This trend monitoring is vital to ensure the health of aquatic life and maximise grow-out, according to water testing specialist LaMotte.

A case study showing the application of LaMotte’s innovative WaterLink® Spin Touch® photometer in a leading US research facility is available to download FREE using the button above, or via the link at the end of this article.

Students and researchers at the Virginia Cooperative Extension in the USA – a partnership including Virginia Tech, Virginia State University, the US Department of Agriculture, and local governments – are using the WaterLink® Spin Touch® photometer regularly.

This partnership aims to generate research-based knowledge and resources to help communities be more successful and resilient.

The Extension has the following aquaculture facilities with significant RAS (recirculating aquaculture system) integration:

  • 35 outdoor ponds;
  • Indoor hatchery system; and
  • Six replicated aquaponic systems.

At this scale of diverse systems, use of the Spin Touch® is saving researchers multiple hours which can be reinvested into other crucial activities. While these frequent monitoring tasks were previously completed with a spectrophotometer and various hazardous chemicals, researchers now carry out analytical monitoring faster and more safely using a Spin Touch®.

The Spin Touch® photometer

Measure up to eight parameters simultaneously

Key benefits of the Spin Touch® include:

  • Measuring up to eight key chemical parameters without having to mix or add reagents by hand;
  • Sufficiently automate processes to reduce user error and testing time while minimising the training required;
  • Capturing results digitally in the device and seamlessly share results instantly; and
  • Safely enables water testing without hazardous reagents.

Without any experience or safety concerns, users can quickly use the Spin Touch® to measure up to eight aquatic measurements at one time. Researchers can specify testing based on freshwater, saltwater, or brackish water and gather data including:

  • Alkalinity
  • Ammonia
  • Calcium
  • Hardness
  • Magnesium
  • Nitrate
  • Nitrite
  • pH
  • Phosphate

To use the Spin Touch®, researchers simply fill a two- inch SpinDisk® Reagent Cartridge with less than three millilitres of the sample water and place the disk in the instrument. After pressing start on the touchscreen, results will display in two minutes.

On-screen test results can be sent wirelessly to the WaterLink® Solutions app on any connected device, and these digital results are also stored locally on the SpinTouch® with a time/datestamp. Furthermore, a rechargeable battery means this portable instrument can quickly move throughout the lab to capture hundreds of results.
