Low-impact net cleaning brings greater sustainability and lower operational costs

LINDGREN-PITMAN, INC (“LP”) brings a unique approach to cleaning aquaculture nets in situ with the Stingray E230, an all-electric net cleaner with patented technology.

“Vibraclean” knuckles on low-speed propellers use vibration and suction to shake free and remove fouling from non-metallic nets. Because they have low RPMs (revolutions per minute), and do not need to use high-pressure jets or cavitation, the Stingray E230 Vibraclean propellers are the lowest-impact and safest method of ROV (remote operated vehicle) net cleaning.

Vibraclean is gentle enough that a diver’s glove is unharmed from contact

In 2025, LP completed on-site abrasion and net-strength tests on nets simulating the equivalent of more than 10 years of regular full-strength cleaning. Independent testing showed no abrasion wear and no reduction in maximum tensile strength of any of the nets in comparison to new net panels. Farms can count on the longevity of their nets without worrying about the wear effect of cleaning with the Stingray E230.

Users report excellent performance against all types of fouling, especially in heavy fouling including mussels, kelp, and barnacles. Stingray E230 ROVs show little to no maintenance required after months of use reducing downtime and increasing cleaning quality.

In addition, the Stingray’s Vibraclean technology produces almost no noise underwater, which reduces acoustic stress on fish in the pens and aquatic life around the site. First-hand accounts from farm managers point to the negative effect of high-decibel operations like high-pressure washing on fish appetite and growth, even in nearby sites not being cleaned. In contrast, farm managers report no negative change in feeding during cleaning with the Stingray E230.

The Stingray E230 can operate with only an 11kW generator, burning 20 litres of diesel a day. Other cleaners burn as much as 10 times that. For the owner and operator of the ROV cleaner, this means an immediate 90% reduction of fuel cost and less generator or power pack maintenance throughout the year. With the elimination of hydraulics, the owner also won’t need to deal with burst hoses and pump rebuilds.

Lindgren-Pitman celebrated its 50th year of marine industrial engineering and fabrication in 2025 in Pompano Beach, Florida USA. LP commercial longline equipment and electric reels have decades of continuous use globally in harsh marine conditions. The Stingray E230 joined the catalogue of products over 10 years ago.
