THE Scottish Fishermen’s Federation (SFF) is today holding its first meeting with Fergus Ewing (pictured), the new Scottish Minister with responsibility for fishing.
Bertie Armstrong, chief executive of the SFF, says this initial meeting with the Rural Economy and Connectivity Secretary in Edinburgh will enable the fishing industry to outline its key priorities.
‘The fish in our seas is a renewable food resource that needs to be cherished and valued,’ he said.
‘The success of meeting our responsibilities of sustainable food production rests on having a profitable fishing fleet and we look to the Scottish government to adopt an approach that encourages this.
‘Policy making needs to be adopted on an evidential basis that recognises the important role fishing plays in our economy and in securing a sustainable food resource.
‘There will be many pressing issues facing the minister, not least the phased introduction of the discard ban where it is essential that practicable and flexible management measures are put in place to prevent any negative impacts on the Scottish fleet.
‘We look forward to working closely with the new government.’
