Loch Long Salmon, the company that aims to bring semi-closed containment fish farming to Scotland, is holding an event on 10 May in Dunbeg, near Oban, to meet local suppliers and explain its plans.

The company’s proposal for a salmon farm on Loch Long was rejected last year by the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park Authority, but now its plan is to seek permission for a new site, at Lurignish on Loch Linnhe, on Scotland’s west coast.

As with the original project, the idea is to deploy semi-closed containment technology, protecting the salmon in the cages from sea lice and predators, while capturing the salmon waste for energy or as a fertiliser component.

The event on Wednesday 10 May is being held in conjunction with the Lochaber Chamber of Commerce, at the Scottish Association for Marine Science headquarters between 2pm and 5pm.

The company says the project is expected to require a total investment of over £60m, representing an exciting opportunity for local and regional businesses to get involved in consenting, construction and operational phases.

Stewart Hawthorn, Managing Director of Loch Long Salmon, said: “The semi-closed containment technology we are proposing for our site at Lurignish on Loch Linnhe has been proven commercially in Norway, Canada and the Faroe Islands.

“While there are some elements that differ to existing systems in operation there are a lot of technical similarities and we know businesses here have the right expertise and skills to help.”

“I hope we see a range of businesses from the area so they can hear about our plans and we can better understand the local supply chain, allowing us to maximise the economic benefits of this transformative technology for this region and the rest of Scotland.”
