IN the new look March issue of Fish Farmer, out now, we go behind the scenes of Mowi Scotland’s feed mill on Skye and talk to the company’s Claes Jonermark about market needs, Mowi feeds and the benefits of fully integrated farming.

Switching the focus to Europe, the executive director of the European Aquaculture Society, Alistair Lane, looks back on 20 years in the job – and forward to the EAS’s next show in Cork, in October, which will host a RAS workshop for the first time and a repeat of the successful Innovation Forum, launched in Berlin last year.

This was the month where the effects of the coronavirus worldwide closed down travel routes and trade opportunities, with many future events, including the giant Boston and Brussels seafood shows, being postponed.

We will bring news of when these exhibitions are back in the diary, and update you on the status of the other major industry events planned for the months ahead.

In the meantime, our March issue reflects the adaptability of fish farmers and suppliers, not least in the Scottish sector, as they seek to expand their businesses and find new markets.

We have a special feature on the boatbuilders catering for Scotland’s growing aquaculture industry, and we also highlight exciting proposals by salmon farmers to produce fish more sustainably.

And we hear from the Aquaculture Industry Leadership Group\’s Stewart Graham on the need for a regulatory system that can keep pace with industry innovation.

From Edinburgh, we report on the Fish Veterinary Society’s annual conference, where Brexit – or Vetxit – was high on the agenda. Keynote speaker Simon Doherty stressed the importance of safeguarding the veterinary workforce, after the transition period ends on December 31, to ensure optimum animal health.
