Grimsby loses contest to Billingsgate

THE 65th British Fish Craft Championships has moved from its Grimsby area base of the past three years and will take place this weekend at the world famous Billingsgate fish market.
The championships showcase the best of the UK’s fishmongers as they display their skills in a series of demonstrations. Billingsgate Seafood Training School will lay on taster sessions.
On Sunday, visitors can watch fishmongers compete against each other, with the overall winner crowned British Fish Craft Champion 2017.
The past three events have been held on Cleethorpes seafront, Grimsby’s resort town. Organiser Gary Hooper said: ‘The Grimsby area has been very good to us and, of course, we were close to a lot of fish and fish handling expertise.
‘But although the local council offered to help, we lost some of our sponsors, including Tesco and some other big names, which meant we did not have the necessary funding to appear in the Grimsby area again.
‘We have held the event at Billingsgate in the past. Again it is an excellent venue with plenty of fish and some highly skilled people to hand. We hope to return to the Grimsby area in the future.’
