The Canadian Court of Appeal has upheld a decision to keep open pens out of the region a decision laid down by the Canadian Federal Court two years ago.

Groups opposed to net pen salmon farming celebrated the ruling, calling it the first step in a path toward clearing all open-net salmon farms in the province.

First Nations Chief Don Svanvik said the ruling was a crucial step in ensuring the survival of wild salmon on our coast.

“It underscores that there is a clear path – morally, politically and legally – for the Liberal government to finish the job: to keep its promise to remove all open-net salmon farms from our coast by 2029, if not sooner,” he added.

The Pacific Salmon Foundation said it would continue to lead independent research, monitoring the health of wild salmon in the Discovery Islands and other areas in the lead-up over the next three years , when the federal government’s ban on open-net pen salmon farming in British Columbia takes effect.

It has praised the Canadian Government and former fisheries ministers Bernadette Jordan and Joyce Murray for decisions that have put the health and interests of wild salmon first.

It was just over five years ago that the then-Fisheries Minister Bernadette Jordan announced all salmon farming in the Discovery Islands would be phased out and this would be the last time that any such farms in the province could be federally licensed.
