The barge, named Torvgjógv, was supplied by aquaculture supplier GroAqua, which built the vessel in Poland.

The 40-metre barge has capacity for 700 tons of feed and is equipped with 18 feeding lines, making it possible to feed 18 sea cages simultaneously.

The feeding system and control software were developed by GroAqua in the Faroe Islands. The new platform uses AI technology to optimize feed utilisation in the cages more efficiently than before.

Key focus areas include improved site operations, expanded reporting and management tools, and stronger environmental performance. The systems are automated and can be remotely operated from shore.

The barge is also prepared for shore power operation, supporting more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly farming operations in the future.

“Based on our positive experience with previous feed barges from GroAqua, we expect Torvgjógv to further strengthen operations at our farming site in Fuglafjørður,” said Oddvald Olsen, Site Manager at Bakkafrost.

He also highlighted its improved logistics and increased operational safety for both the site and employees.

Kristian Andreasen, Head of Feed Barge Department at GroAqua, commented: “We are very grateful for the trust Bakkafrost continues to show us by choosing another GroAqua feed barge. In close collaboration with Bakkafrost, we have developed a barge we are truly proud of.

“We continuously work on improving our feed barges together with farmers and operators in the field.”

Over the past year, GroAqua has delivered four new feed barges to Bakkafrost in the Faroe Islands, including two 700-ton barges and two 1,100-ton barges, serving various farming sites.
