Bakkafrost Scotland extends WIIGA sponsorship for 25th anniversary

Bakkafrost Scotland has confirmed it is to continue sponsoring the Western Isles Island Games Association (WIIGA) as the squad prepares to travel to Guernsey for the 2023 NatWest International Island Games.

WIIGA is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Run with the support of volunteers from across the sporting community, it works in partnership with local sports clubs throughout the Western Isles and provides invaluable support to elite athletes to enable them to compete in the competition against 23 other islands from across the world, every two years. This year’s competition expects 3,000 participants and a further 2,000 island visitors to attend.

The 2023 event will see the biggest WIIGA representation yet, with around 110 athletes and support team travelling to Guernsey. They will spend a week (8-15 July) competing in sports including football, indoor bowls, golf, badminton, cycling, shooting, swimming and athletics. WIIGA will be competing in women’s golf and archery for the first time in 2023.

Bakkafrost Scotland has a proud history of supporting the communities in which it operates, directly enabling local athletes to compete at an elite level on the world stage.

Ian Laister, managing director of Bakkafrost Scotland said: “We are very proud to continue our long-term sponsorship of the Western Isles Island Games Association, this partnership reinforces our passion for promoting health and wellbeing in the communities where we live and work.

“As training will soon be underway, we wish everyone in the Western Isles team the best of luck.”

Iain GG Campbell, general team manager of the Western Isles Island Games Association said: “Our partnership with Bakkafrost Scotland is of great benefit to the Western Isles Island Games Association, and it really shows the benefits that a successful sponsorship can provide for the local community.

“We must extend our thanks to them for their continued support which enables us to invest in uniforms, merchandise and to help promote the work we do with the team and the games.”
