In this month’s magazine we report on the highlights from Aqua Nor 2021, one of the industry’s biggest trade shows. The event brought the aquaculture industry together again, both in person and online.

The buzz around Aqua Nor was palpable, even for those of us who could only experience it remotely. Hopefully the success of this year’s event as a “hybrid”, including online presentations and virtual networking, will provide a template for future events.

We also look forward in this issue to the European Aquaculture Society’s Aquaculture Europe event, taking place in Madeira this October, including profiles and insights from three of the keynote speakers.

The September issue also features a look back at a busy six months for Boats and Barges, and also at the latest developments in Cages, Pens, Nets and Moorings.

Nicki Holmyard reports on initiatives around the UK – and in the US – which are making great progress in the restoration of native oyster species.

Also, Hamish Macdonell and Dr Martin Jaffa consider the implications for the aquaculture sector in Scotland of the SNP-Green pact concluded last month. Providing some stability for the SNP minority government while allowing room for the two parties to differ on certain issues, the deal between the parties sets up scope for co-operation and conflict. For aquaculture in particular, the SNP has previously committed to encouraging sustainable growth in fish farming while the Scottish Greens have said they would end net-pen farming at marine sites, preferring to see fish farming take place in land-based facilities (if at all).

Finally, this issue also includes a special feature on Careers in Aquaculture. Despite the challenges, this is a sector that continues to offer a bright future.
