SALMON FARM JOBS ADVERT GENERATES FLOOD OF APPLICANTS04 October, 2011 –
Four new jobs advertised by The Scottish Salmon Company for its expanding operation on Harris attracted a flood of applicants.
Over 58 people applied for the jobs of site manager and marine operatives at the company’s farm at Plocrapool.
The jobs are the first to be created as part of the company’s plans to create a sustainable business in the Hebrides, which over the next two years could see another xx jobs generated.
Stewart McLelland, Chief Operating Officer for The Scottish Salmon Company, said: “We were astonished to receive such a large number of applicants. This may be indicative of the current economy, but it also proves that we are creating jobs in the right place.
“Salmon farming can be a very rewarding career and I am very proud to say that we have members of staff with over 20 years’ experience. Our plans to develop our business to meet the growing demand for top quality Scottish salmon worldwide will hopefully mean that many more young people can enter the industry and enjoy a fulfilling working life.”
The Scottish Salmon Company was named Best Marine Aquaculture Company 2011 at the Scottish Marine Aquaculture Awards, sponsored by the Crown Estates, for its sustainable practice, business performance, investment, staff management practices and local community involvement.
In 2010, the company reopened the processing plant in Stornoway with the creation of 77 new jobs. Plans to support the factory include the development of up to ten new and existing farm sites over the next five years.
