New scientist20 February, 2014 –
DR ASTRID Buran Holan has been hired as a research scientist in the field of controlled environment aquaculture in Nofima in Norway.
She will strengthen the technological aspects of this field in Nofima, and contribute to the further development of the Centre for Recirculation in Aquaculture (NCRA) at Sunndalsøra, says senior scientist Bendik Fyhn Terjesen in Nofima.
Through the NCRA, which was opened in 2010, Nofima wishes to contribute to increased knowledge about fish nutrition, physiology, health and welfare in the most important farmed species in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS).
The Centre is well suited for testing of equipment, methods and operational routines in collaboration with the industry.
Dr Holan completed her doctoral degree at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), NTNU Sealab and the Department of Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering. She continued working there as a researcher.
In Nofima and NCRA, she will focus on developing and integrating new or already existing water treatment technology in recirculating and semi-closed aquaculture systems.
Simultaneously, Dr Holan will see technology in close relation to environment aspects and the needs and requirements of the fish in such systems.
