Big players at Irish seafood conference03 April, 2014 –
THREE leading figures in the global seafood industry lined up to speak at the BIM (Bord Iascaigh Mhara) 2014 national conference, which opened in Dublin yesterday.
Ian Smith, the CEO of Canada’s Clearwater Seafoods gave the keynote address, while Martin Sullivan of Ocean Choice International and Magnus Bjarnason, CEO of the Icelandic Group, spoke as part of a session of raw materials.
During a session on building scale in the industry, Jon Hindar of Cermaq joined Joe Gill, director of corporate broking with Goodbody, and Caroline Keeling, CEO of Keelings.
Building scale in the seafood sector is an important issue for the Irish industry, with smaller processors unable to compete with companies from other countries for international contracts due to a lack of raw materials, particularly in relation to salmon.
The Irish Seafood Sector has the potential to increase sales to 1 billion and deliver 1,200 additional jobs by 2017, BIM said at the conference, which is entitled Capturing Irelands Share of the Global Seafood Opportunity .
