Weather delays Humber fish supplies Published:  23 October, 2006

THE Humber fish markets were effectively without their usual Monday supplies today as exceptionally bad weather delayed the arrival of Icelandic container ships.

Fishgate at Hull was today expecting over 1,500 boxes of haddock, cod and other varieties which did not arrive in time, although market officials were trying to source a small amount of fish.

Grimsby would probably have handled well over 3,000 boxes, but had to make do with half that amount. One vessel landed 143 boxes and the rest came from overland sources and from some Icelandic/Faroese containers which managed to make it through. Prices were fairly high for what little fish was available.

The ships are expected to dock around midnight and, provided there are no further delays, both markets should have good supplies tomorrow when demand is likely to be keen. The weather has also hit fishing operations around Iceland in recent weeks, leading to lower than expected supplies on the Humber recently.
