Norwegian exports of herring are said to have showed a decline in August
THE value of exports of Norwegian seafood in August totalled NOK 2.6 billion, according to the latest figures from Statistics Norway and the Norwegian Seafood Export Council (NSEC).
This is an increase of NOK 18 million compared with August 2006. For the year to date, exports of Norwegian seafood total NOK 22.7 billion, an increase of NOK 1.5 billion. This marks an export record for the period January-August, as well as for the month of August.
Exports of seafood in August increased by 21% compared with August 2006. This is primarily attributable to an increase in exports of salted fish, clipfish and stockfish. The value of exports of Norwegian salmon and Norwegian Fjord Trout remained stable, while exports of herring and mackerel showed a decline.
Exports of fresh Norwegian Fjord Trout in August totalled NOK 65 million, an increase of NOK 36 million or 121%. Russia is the biggest recipient, with a market value of NOK 43 million. For the year to date, the value of exports of fresh Norwegian Fjord Trout to Russia totals NOK 253 million, compared with NOK 14 million in the previous year.
Exports of Norwegian salmon in August totalled NOK 1.4 billion, slightly down compared with August 2006. The volume of exports (in whole fish) was 55,000 tonnes, an increase of 30% compared with August 2006. For the year to date, the value of Norwegian salmon exports totals NOK 11.2 billion. France, Denmark and the UK are the biggest importers of Norwegian salmon.
Exports of clipfish increased by 22% in August to NOK 173 million. Much of this is attributable to exports to Portugal, which increased by 26% to a value of NOK 118 million in August alone. Exports to Brazil totalled NOK 26 million, a slight decrease. Cod clipfish exports to Mexico totalled NOK 5 million, positioning Mexico as the third biggest recipient.
