SEAFOOD Scotland (SFS) as part of its sponsorship of the Fish & Chip Shop of the Year Competition, presented a Catching for the Frying Sector Award to skipper John Buchan of the Ocean Venture, at a star-studded ceremony in London yesterday.

This award recognises excellence in Scottish skippers supplying UK fish and chip shops with top quality, responsibly caught fish.

John, one of the stars of the BBC Trawlermen series, said he was thrilled with the award, which was handed to his son John Jnr, who skippers the vessel on alternate trips. “We have close links with the fish and chip shop sector and put a lot of effort into catching the size and quality of fish required by the trade,” he explained.

One of Ocean Venture’s customers is the Anstruther Fish Bar in Fife, which won the Scottish heats of the Fish & Chip Shop of the Year competition, and came second overall in the final. “It is important to us to know where our fish comes from and to guarantee its freshness and quality, and the Ocean Venture excels in this” said owners Robert and Alison Smith.

Handing over the award, Iain MacSween, Scottish Fishermen’s Organisation Chief Executive and SFS Chairman, explained that the award was an important part of the organisation’s efforts to reinforce the value-chain focus within the industry and to encourage continued collaboration between Scottish fishermen, processors and members of the frying sector.

The Fish & Chip Shop of the Year Competition is organised by the Sea Fish Industry Authority and is currently in its 19th year. It is one of the biggest annual events in the frying sector diary. is published by Special Publications.
