Special event planned for Cornwall Published:  14 November, 2006

A CORNISH Fish Sustainability discussion workshop is being organised by Seafood Cornwall for Rick Stein’s cookery school in Padstow on November 29.

Seafood Cornwall says that with the work of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), the Marine Conservation Society (MCS), WWF and Greenpeace – the public’s awareness of fish sustainability issues has never been greater.

Supermarkets too are also far more aware of the issues than ever before. And for a region like Cornwall, with water on three sides, the fishing and the fish processing industry remains a vital part of the social, economic and cultural fabric of many communities within the County. Therefore, with such a high dependency on fish it is essential that the region’s catchers and processors also engage in the debate to ensure all buyers (from single consumers to multiple retailers) are aware of the sustainability, quality, diversity and provenance of fish landed in Cornwall.

The aim of the day is to bring together catchers, processors, NGO groups (including MSC, MCS and WWF), policy makers, scientists, food writers, restaurateurs, and retailers in an informal setting to create a forum to discuss the issues and raise awareness of some great work that is already underway in Cornwall.
