Spain: Vigo has plans to unite marine scientific centres Published:  09 December, 2005

THE Spanish city of Vigo is discussing a project to coordinate a large part of Galician marine reserarch onto one site, according to the Spanish newspaper lavozdegalicia.es. The new site would be called the City of Science.

At the moment the scientific sites, which are both public and private, are dispersed throughout the city. This initiative would unite most of the marine research experts under one roof and is now being coordinated by the local government of Galicia.

Many voices in the local scientific community have expressed the need to unite the scientific resources in Vigo, a city which is considered one of the European sites with highest concentration of specialists per square metre in this field of research. Antonio Figueras, the director of the Institute of Marine Investigation in Vigo, is reportedly in favour of the project, saying that it would help make the centres more visible and gain better results.
