SHETLAND-based Friends of the Earth agent for environmental justice, Vic Thomas has branded changes to Shetlad Islands Council’s planning system for marine development as the opposite of “open and fair government.”

Instead, he said, the council had created a “rubber stamping facility” for the salmon farming industry, which sees the handling of works licence applications and the promotion of the industry dealt with by the same council department.

He said he was “gathering information” and was waiting for the council to come back to him with “responses to certain questions”, but added that he was prepared to refer the council to the local government ombudsman should the answers be unsatisfactory.
