Shellfish conference to be held in Ireland Published:  22 March, 2006

THE Irish Shellfish Association is holding its annual conference at the West County Hotel in Ennis, Co Clare this Friday.

With a large turnout from producers, processors and industry suppliers expected, the conference will focus on shellfish markets, new rules for putting safe shellfish on the market, developments in research and technology and changes in legislation at EU level.

A highlight of the conference will be the launch (at 10.20am) of a specially-commissioned report on the €7 million Irish rope mussel sector and the processing sector it supports, completed by PricewaterhouseCoopers and funded by BIM and Enterprise Ireland. This comprehensive report will focus on the many challenges and opportunities for a very important sector of the Irish shellfish industry and make a series of recommendations on production, financing, organisation and development that the industry and the relevant state bodies will need to consider very seriously.
