A SEMINAR on Scottish fishing will hear later this week that the industry still faces a number of challenges.

The seminar on Friday May 25 – The Trouble with Scottish Fishing – has been organised by the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation (SFF) and will be held at the Fishing 2007 exhibition at the SECC in Glasgow.

Scottish Fishermen’s Federation (SFF) chief executive, Bertie Armstrong, will tell the seminar that no matter how good the state of stocks may be, the industry will always face challenges to ensure the sustainable harvesting of fish in future years.

“The major immediate challenge is to ensure we achieve realistic catching opportunities for 2008,” he will say.

Also speaking at the seminar will be Professor Michael Kaiser of the University of Wales, who will give a presentation on marine spatial planning (restricted areas to fishing) and its role in fisheries management.

Other speakers include Dr Dick Ferro of Fisheries Research Services who will talk about co-operative work between fishermen and scientists, and John Watt of the SFF Services who will give a presentation on the close working relationship between oil/energy operators and the fishing industry.
