Search is on for champion oyster shucker Published:  12 July, 2006

WITH this year’s native oyster season almost upon us, the search is on for supreme shuckers to take part in the Tabasco British Oyster Opening Championships 2006 which will take place at 3.30pm on Friday, September 1 at Quaglino’s Restaurant, London.

The aim of the championships is to find the fastest oyster opener or ‘shucker’ in Britain. The winner – the British Champion – will receive a £250 cash prize and an expenses paid trip to compete against other world class shuckers in the International Oyster Opening Championship in Galway, Ireland at the end of September.

Contestants are required to open and display 30 native oysters as quickly as possible. Entries will be judged by a panel of seafood experts and chefs, according to the Galway International Festival rules.

Tabasco is looking for skilled shuckers, from enthusiastic amateurs to experienced professionals, to pit their skills against each other. A selection of shucking celebrities will also be attempting to set a new record – or to just escape with their thumbs intact! Applications are now open, so anyone interested in entering should contact Food Matters on 020 7371 6466 for further information as soon as possible. is published by Special Publications.
