Scots fishermen “frozen out” Published:  04 December, 2006

Richard Lochhead

FOLLOWING the conclusion of the EU/Norway quota negotiations in Brussels, and their recommendations of a significant cut in catching opportunities for cod and blue whiting, the Scottish National Party(SNP) Shadow Environment Minister Richard Lochhead MSP condemned the deal, and called for Scotland to make their own case in international negotiations.

Mr Lochhead said: “At a time when our fishermen are reporting an increased number of cod in the seas around Scotland, our fishermen’s quota has been cut again, which will now mean that valuable cod will now be thrown dead back into the sea.

“This bitter blow for Scottish fishing interests was negotiated under

the unfair and unjust CFP by the EU and Norway.

“Scotland’s fishing communities have been frozen out of vital

negotiations over their futures, and as a result, have been kicked in

the teeth by the EU’s failed CFP policy. It’s time for a fair deal

for Scotland’s vital fishing industry, which is why an SNP government

would support withdrawal from the CFP and a fresh start for Scotland’s

fishing interests.”
