SCIENCE SHOULD UNDERPIN GOOD FISHING POLICY Published:  15 June, 2012

Following European talks earlier in the week, Scottish Fisheries Secretary Richard Lochhead was questioned in Parliament today during a Ministerial statement on reform of the Common Fisheries Policy.

Scottish Liberal Democrat MSP for Shetland Tavish Scott said: “There is always much hype around fisheries reform but fishermen usually wait to see the detail before cracking open the champagne.

“Fishermen must not be financially penalised by regulatory changes which may sound sensible but do not work because the detail is even worse than the previous policy.

“Science should underpin good fishing policy. But Scotland only has accurate science covering 40% of fish stocks. Until that dramatically improves with investment in good science involving local fishermen then reform that prevents discards and works is some way off.”
