THE FORMER Shetland owned pelagic trawler Altaire yesterday landed a haul of 2,000 tonnes of mackerel, believed to be the largest ever such landing anywhere in the UK.
The Altaire, now owned by a Dutch company, came into Lerwick harbour
yesterday afternoon and started landing at Shetland Catch at around 8pm,last night.Shetland Catch managing director Simon Leiper said he was delighted to attract such a big catch. He added that Shetland Catch had been successful so far this season in attracting a steady stream of vessels.”The market for mackerel is at a fairly healthy level at the moment, particularly the European market.Local and Scottish boats have still some quota left, he said, adding his hope that a landings stream would continue next month when the Irish fleet starts to land.On Thursday night, into Friday, the Fraserburgh vessel Enterprise landed 1,100 tonnes of mackerel.
